How To Get Meals This Summer for Kids and Families

Across Washington state, one in six kids faces food insecurity, and this can get worse over the summer when children aren’t in school and can’t get free meals. Here are some programs that can help get kids and families fed over the summer.

  • What is food insecurity? According to the USDA, food insecurity is the “limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods, or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways.” It can impact both physical and emotional health. Seattle’s Race and Social Justice Initiative (RSJI) includes a map that shows food insecurity across King County.
  • Free or low-cost meals: You can find a list of food banks at the Seattle Food Committee. You can also donate to food banks to help them feed those in need. KOMO highlights the Hunger Intervention Program, whose executive director is quoted as saying, “Anyone comes, they want a meal, they need a meal, they get a meal, no questions asked.”
  • How to get SNAP benefits: In Washington state, SNAP, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, is called Basic Food. To find out if you qualify, visit their site. Students who qualify for SNAP can also get SUN bucks, which gives $120 to feed kids over the summer.

What Seattle’s Talking About

👩🏾‍❤️‍💋‍👩🏽 Seattle loses top spot for same-sex households: Though Seattle’s share of same-sex couple households increased (3.2% to 3.7%) according to census data, our city still lost the top spot to Portland by 0.1%. San Francisco remained in third place and Washington, D.C., in fourth. In Seattle, unmarried partners are the majority – a trend that sets us apart from most other US cities. [Seattle Times]

⚽ DHS vs Iran vs Egypt: Travel restrictions for Iran's soccer team have eased, allowing them to arrive in Seattle a day earlier. The change follows complaints from Iran about unfair treatment during the tournament. Egypt's request to stay after their last match was denied by security officials, but they're now allowed to practice earlier as well. Both teams will play Friday night in Seattle. [KING5]

📥 Postal Service skips House meeting: As the federal government seeks to limit mail-in voting, the Postal Service cancelled a public meeting with a state House panel. Recent rules proposed would force states to share a list of mail-in voters with the federal government, as well as change the design of envelopes and set new conditions for mail-in ballots.
