What To Know About the Seattle Torrent

  • The Team Was Built in 205 Days: The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) announced the formation of two new teams, Seattle and Vancouver, on April 30, 2025. They played their first game on Nov. 21. That’s only 205 days to assemble a team and get ready to actually play. Training camp started 10 days prior to the first game. [The Stranger]
  • The Team Has Real Bonafides: Team Captain Hillary Knight has been a Team USA captain, won an Olympic Gold medal, and previously played for The Boston Fleet. General Manager Meghan Turner helped start the Fleet. Coach Steve O’Rourke started his career with the Tri-City Americans of the Western Hockey League before moving on to coaching, and the team itself is made up of players who previously played for Montrèal, Ottawa, New York, and Boston.
  • There’s Lots of Room to Grow: The PWHL’s salary cap is $1.3 million. The NHL’s is $95.5 million. The salary of one Kraken player, Vince Dunn, could fund the entire PWHL’s eight-team roster for two years with money left over. But the good news is:
  • Seattle Loves Women’s Sports: The home opener made history with over 16,000 fans in attendance. In fact, they set a new record for professional women’s hockey attendance in the United States! The jerseys are selling out, and Rough & Tumble can’t keep up with the demand for Hillary Knight cheese curds!
  • How To Watch or Attend Tonight’s Game:
    • The game is at Climate Pledge Arena. It starts at 7 pm. Get tickets here. They’re really affordable!
    • Watch it on Fox13+ if you’re local.
    • It will also stream on the PWHL’s YouTube channel.

A Breakthrough in HIV Treatment With Seattle Ties 🧪

Two studies published Monday (World AIDS Day) that point to potential cures for HIV included the work of two researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center and two from the University of Washington. These breakthroughs come at a time when support for HIV research is fading in the U.S., owing partially to the freezing of programs like PEPFAR by the Trump administration. [Seattle Times]

Ballard Has Some of the Best Tacos 🌮

Lupe’s Situ Tacos, a Mexican-Lebanese fusion restaurant in Ballard, was named one of the thirty-three best new restaurants in the U.S. Apparently, it also has an amazing happy hour. ‘Situ’ is an Arabic word for grandmother, and owner Lupe Flores opened the spot to honor her Lebanese-Mexican grandmother. Be Careful Around Coyotes 🐶

There have been recent reports of aggressive coyotes in Volunteer Park. If you happen to be out and about in a park with a pet or small child, be sure to pay close attention. If you do encounter a coyote, get big and try to scare it away. [Capitol Hill Seattle Blog]

Amazon Now Will Get You Items in 30 Minutes 🏪

Amazon is testing a new service in Philly and Seattle called Amazon Now, which is intended to get customers items they need quickly (diapers, eggs, produce, toothbrushes, etc.) [GeekWire]

  • But What Are They Gonna Do About Porch Pirates? As deliveries increase over the holiday season, more people are having deliveries stolen off their porch. Last year, Pierce County launched a partnership with Amazon to raise awareness about preventing package theft. They recommended tracking deliveries, choosing delivery windows, and using pickup locations. Maybe we also suggest just shopping local? [King5]

No More Overtime for SPD 👮

The Seattle Police Department is barring all overtime for the rest of the year due to overspending. Normal uses of overtime are on hold (including investigating burglary and theft), and overtime on homicide investigation and park enforcement must be approved. The budget included $12.8 million on overtime this year, but they are budgeting less overtime for next year, a goal that is ‘unrealistic’, according to a budget memo. [PubliCola]
